Abstract
|
The aim of this study is to identify the relationship of broadband speed and the productivity level in major Asian countries by comparing the average internet broadband speed connection in Malaysia and other advanced countries in the Asia-Pacific region. GDP (gross domestic product) per capita of each country is used commonly to rank its overall productivity achievement that represents the size of the economy. I found strong indication that the lower speed of broadband connection to be correlated to the lower GDP per capita level in Malaysia comparing with the much higher average broadband speed connections resulted in higher productivity levels in the advanced countries. The current available broadband speed ranges from 1 Mbps to maximum 20 Mbps in Malaysia paled in comparison to the top broadband speed countries in Asian achieving up to 1000 Mbps. The much higher average subscription cost per Mbps in Malaysia compared to advanced countries is not economically justifiable and the frequent line interruption, congestion and latency problems affected the efficiency and productivity level of businesses and individual users in Malaysia. Several literature reviews are cited based on studies in OECD and ASEAN countries as well as in the USA shows similar findings and associations with the economic performances of these countries in relation to the speed, penetration, cost and service quality of broadband connections.
