Title Consumer preferences of different nutritional labels on restaurant menus / Yau See Yuan
Abstract Diet related health problems have been increasing in Malaysia. Malaysian life-style and dietary habit have changed. People nowadays are concerned about health and are likely to use nutritional labels on packaged food products. However, topics on restaurant menu as a tool to convey nutritional information to consumers and help consumers in food choices selection process are still limited. Are nutrition and health plays an important role in consumers’ menu selection? What is the acceptability of consumer on the nutritional label on restaurant menus? Which nutritional label format preferred on restaurant menu and what ways the format is preferred? The aims of this study is (i) to investigate the role of nutrition and health in consumers’ menu selection, (ii) to determine the acceptance of nutritional label on restaurant menus and (iii) to identify the preferred nutritional label format on restaurant menu and what ways the format is preferred. An experimental design with five nutritional label formats was employed. Fifty questionnaires were randomly distributed to respondents aged between 20 to 55 years old. The questionnaire consisted of two sections, namely (a) consumer preference of nutritional label, (b) demographic information. The findings of this study show that consumers are likely to select a food item based on nutrition and health factors on restaurant menu, consumers accept nutritional information on restaurant menus and prefer menu with the format of numerical number with traffic light.
