Abstract
|
The intention of this study is to provide insights from the employers’ perspective on the interviewing process on candidate selection. It aims to provide a better understanding of the preferences, differences and limitations of the interview process, while also obtaining information on the purposes of rejection. Three factors that were investigated were skills, emotional intelligence (EQ) and cognitive abilities. A self administered survey was conducted on HR managers and recruiters from recruiting agencies. Male interviewers were found to be more lenient as compared to their female counterparts. Male interviewers also had higher preference for candidates with good emotional intelligence. Female interviewers were more inclined to choose candidates based on their skills. Cognitive abilities received equally important ratings between the two genders. All three factors were found to be positively correlated to one another. There were eighteen other constructs that were analyzed under the three main factors. An analytical explanation was given on each construct and its relevance of importance was explained. Conclusively it was found that skills and cognitive abilities were the most important factors needed within a candidate in order to be selected. Further analysis was also carried out to discern the factors that were used for rejecting candidates. It was found that poor personality and overall impression was the most common reason used for rejecting interviewed candidates.
