Abstract
|
In this study examines the long-run relationship between dependent variable total poverty and explanatory variables such as economic growth, education and inflation in Malaysia for the period 1970 to 2012. This study uses the Vector-Error-Correction-Model (VECM) framework to avoid what the econometrician term as “spurious regression problem”. The results imply that there are long-run relationships between total poverty and the explanatory variables in Malaysia. Results from the analysis showed that growth in the education was substantially more poverty reducing than the growth in GDP. Economic growth actually played a relatively small role in accounting for Malaysia poverty reduction. There is evidence where substantial growth in education and falling in inflation rate can bring larger overall reduction in poverty.
