Study on high mix low volume assembly process design method for high value added product / Hoe Chee Chang

Abstract
|
A highly competitive environment and a shrinking resource base mandate the
integration of production issue. System supportability issue for the variety of high- value
added product build must be addressed early during the requirements definition process
and evolved progressively through subsequent system design phases. High Mix Low
Volume assembly process design method offers the necessary framework for the
accomplishment of this objective. Its processes are types of processes in which a high
variety of products are produced in relatively low amounts. The purpose of this study is
to gather the best practices for controlling and improving HMLV processes and explore
some approaches of the assembly process design which are better fitted with the types
of complications to meet customer satisfaction in HMLV environments. The main three
objectives of the research study are the limitation of current assembly method, the
suitability of high mix low volume assembly method and the solution of high mix low
volume assembly problem. To systematically investigate lean principle and innovative
approach such as quality functional deployment and Agility in identifying the problems
or constrains and proposing counter measures or solutions, a detail sequence of
methodology in terms of methods and tools can be applied to HMLV assembly design
process. This research method mainly uses quantitative approach based on
questionnaire to compile the characteristics of descriptive research. The survey
population selects production people who worked with the various products build in high
mix low volume environment. The purpose of this research method shows the extent
findings of high mix low volume assembly method are adopted in the company’s reality.
The result indicates that high mix low volume method from lean principle and agility can
be applied for high-value added product build. After summarized the findings, there
have the study limitations such as lack of the voice of customer from the quality aspect,
the efficient and effective supplier-buyer chain and the various product type of different
sizes company application only. Based on the result of the research, the
recommendation is the extent method of lean and agility (including their integration) and
increasing the sample size for the different area of product and company for future
research. When implementing the suggested method, each part of the explored area
could be more thoroughly analyzed based on the specific company’s current
prerequisites and context. This can help to achieve the customer demands in high
product variety and short lead times.
