Abstract
|
There are many factors that affect the quality of English language teaching. Studies have indicated that traditional methods of teaching English brings about boredom, lack of engagement, poor participation and it is very much teacher-centred. Moreover, teacher-centred teaching very often breeds passive learners. This is due to the fact that students are not meaningfully engaged in their learning process, making them mere recipients of knowledge, rather than active participants in the knowledge acquiring process. Recent students have further established that effective use of instructional technology is able to promote better student engagement in the teaching and learning process. This is not surprising considering that young learners of the 21st century are a generation of youngsters who are naturally at east with technological tools. Hence, the IWB is thought upon as an excellent tool in increasing student engagement in the English language classroom. To date there have been many research done on the IWB in developed countries, but these research were done in a context somewhat different from ours. Very little IWB research can be found in the Malaysian context. On these grounds, this research seeks to investigate the role of the interactive whiteboard (IWB) in promoting student engagement in the English language classroom. It is with hope that this study would benefit the relevant stakeholders, particularly the Ministry of Education Malaysia.
