Title Gender differences in career perceptions in GE Malaysia / Chia Chun Siang
Abstract This is a census study that seeks to find out whether there is a significant difference in the perception of career between male and female employee, factors contributed to the differences in perceptions as well as the effective measures to close the gap of career perception between male and female in GEMAC. Independent samples test has been engaged to test the null hypothesis of ‘there is no significant difference between male and female employee’s perception towards their career in GEMAC’. P-value that greater than 0.05 has indicated the acceptance of this null hypothesis. Variance analysis shows the biggest differences career perception dimension between male and female respondent was in career goal. In the other hand, career barrier dimension was found to be the least differences dimension. Mean score analysis have been conducted on the factors affected the gender differences in career perception. Male respondents’ career perceptions were found most affected by internal factors and female were affected most by external factor. Aside, mean score analysis indicates that training program, coaching from superior and motivation talk are the top three perceived effective measures to close gap in career perception by the two gender group. This research possess it’s limitation of the respondent demographic factors were not control, the honesty of the respondent in answering the questionnaire was beyond the control of the researcher as well as the result of this survey could not be generalized to other GE entities and companies. Future research could consider on conducting the same research to hourly staff , controlling certain demographic factor like tenure, include other career perception dimension like reward, study the internal and external factor in depth as well as surveying the measures that has not been adopted by GE.
