Title The evolution of e-publications on mobile devices – are Malaysians ready for it? / Loh Yee Won
Abstract The evolution of e-publications is expected to replace the print publications in the coming years. This can be observed with many publishers in the likes of newspapers and magazines embarking onto the e-publication platform. Book publishers are also retailing e-books since amazon.com have taken lead in the world of online shopping. Lee et al. (2012) reports that there is a significant percentage of tablet device owners and e-reading device owners who have actually increased their reading habits through e-publications. However this seems to contradict a report by The Malaysian Insider (2013) that the adoption of the digital platform is not as popular as it seemed to be. In general it is widely known that the digital reading platforms are gaining ground around in the market, based on the notable increase of e-reading mobile devices and the gaining popularity of e-publication sales over print publications. Meanwhile there are substantial cost and logistics advantages of e-publications as well as the advantage of speed to market (Ségur-Cabanac, 2006). On the consumer front, they too enjoy the reduced cost gained from the publishers. The other advantage of e-publications is the dynamic features that are available on these mobile devices such as text scalability, storage, ease of access and portability (Investopedia, 2010). Despite the obvious advantages of the e-publications on mobile devices, there are organisations in Malaysia that may disagree with the acceptance of e-publications amongt its consumers. A leading direct-selling organisation in which I am attached to, has recently launched their e-newsletter on mobile devices and the decision was based on survey findings that more than 80% of the organisation’s direct-selling members own their own mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. However the download rates and the acceptance level are below expectation, therefore the intent of this study is to provide findings, suggestions, opinions and recommendations on the preferences of consumer habits that influence their e-reading on mobile devices, guided by these research questions: • What are the expectations of consumers when reading an e-publication on their mobile devices? • Is reading e-publications on mobile devices as popular as it was perceived to be? Are Malaysian consumers ready to accept e-publications over the printed versions? • What are the determining variables that influence consumers towards increasing reading e-publications on mobile devices? A literature review on secondary sources is conducted as part of the research study to gather findings from various publications of journals, articles, internet, newspapers and magazines. The references gathered are topics on the e-reading habits and e-publications industry as well as the mobile devices trends. As for primary source, a self-administered survey was used to collect data through a structured e-survey that was emailed to a group of Malaysia adults for a period of 20 days. These primary data was collected from 86 respondents who have fulfilled the criteria to complete the e-questionnaires in these 4 parts comprising 1) Mobile device ownership 2) E-reading preference 3) Personal information 4) Internet accessibility. The e-survey platform www.surveymonkey.com was utilized for this purpose. The findings are processed on the SPSS Statistics platform through several analysis tools; descriptive analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. The results from the analysis indicate that the independent variable of consumer profession, income level, ownership of mobile devices as well as the technological features of mobiles devices do not have any positive relationship to the readership of e-publications on mobile devices. From these findings, the implications are discussed and are concluded with recommendations to organisations that have or plan to embark onto the e-publication strategy.
