Abstract
|
Cost management is a broad issue that cuts across all areas of the organization. Purchasing and supply management are looked to by most organizations as a significant contributor to the organization’s cost management approach, as cost of purchased goods and services makes up 50 percent or more of the cost of sales of most manufacturers today. Thus, this study is carried out to examine the supply chain process of Ciba Vision Alcon Singapore (CVA) focusing on the purchasing department. The purpose of the study is to examine the purchasing strategies of CVA Singapore by reviewing the effectiveness of the strategies. Besides that it also intends to examine the relation between CVA Singapore and its vendors and corporate culture of CVA Singapore. Hence, the independent variables have been identified as purchasing strategies, vendor relation and corporate culture. Meantime the cost advantage has been identified as dependent variable. After literature review, 3 hypotheses were tested to examine the relationship between independent and dependent variables. A survey was conducted in CVA Singapore and questionnaires were distributed to selected associates for data collection. Secondary data from management review report and standard operating procedure also has been used in this study. The analysis results reveal that purchasing strategies, vendor relation and corporate culture are positively related to the cost advantages enjoyed by CVA Singapore. Review of the secondary data also confirmed the results of the analysis. In conclusion CVA Singapore’s purchasing department is well equipped with strategies to contribute for the cost advantage. Essentially the research finding provide a visible direction for the top management and purchasing department of CVA Singapore to further improve the strategies. Besides that the study also provides some idea on the best practices strategies for purchasing department
