Abstract
|
This research study provides preliminary investigations into younger generations known as Millennials or Generation-Y (Howe & Strauss, 2000) on their expectations of organizational mentoring in the digital age. Earlier studies from Kram (1985) - Ragins, Cotton, & Miller (2000) and Eby, McManus, Simon, & Russell (2007) and many others has been conducted towards face-to-face settings either in formal or informal mentorship, very limited research focus on mentoring techniques in organizations for generations that are born in the digital era who are more and more entering the workforce in the future. The research conducted on a focus study of samples from this age group in Malaysia to understand what mentoring means to them and their perceptions of digital or e-Mentoring(Bierema & Merriam, 2002). The findings indicated the great importance of personal learning experience are mostly valued by Gen-Y cohort, compare to expectations from the Company, and from Mentor themselves. Results also evident in strong positive linear correlation between their great expections and the environmental factors. The measurement of three key important variables of e-mentoring are done on overall perceived value, increasing satisfactions and involvement of constructive learrning by the millennials. With this findings, local organizations in Malaysia are given the perspective to compete against multi-nationals and regional companies that are often perceive to offers richer working experience or environment for their employees.
