Title Teamwork as an enable of employee motivation : a case study of the finance department in Steelcase Global Business Center (GBC) / Rooba Haridasan
Abstract This research is undertaken to study the relationship of teamwork as an enabler of employee motivation. The study was undertaken in the Finance department in Steelcase Global Business Center (GBC). The rationale behind this study is that, in a shared service sector, the employees are the assets as they serve customers and motivated employees will tend to perform better and provide better service to customers. The literature review explains, employees are motivated via monetary or through the personal achievement of goals or having a sense of empowerment or feeling a sense of appreciation. There is very little study on teamwork being used as a tool to motivate employees. The research objective of this study is to examine the current level of employee motivation, the level of teamwork practiced and the contribution of teamwork towards employee motivation. A quantitative study was undertaken to understand the level of teamwork and employee motivation in the finance department, by distributing questionnaires. At the end of the questionnaire there were open ended questions which were to be answered by the managerial level of the finance department in Steelcase Global Business Center (GBC), to obtain their perception on the importance of employee motivation and teamwork, and how would they encourage teamwork. The findings brought forth that, employees in the finance department in Steelcase BGC are generally motivated, practices teamwork and there is a positive correlation between teamwork and employee motivation. It is also found that the factor in teamwork that motivates employees is the Interpersonal Relations & Communication (IRC), which means the employees are motivated when they feel a sense of belonging and appreciation with the team. The Group Decision Making /Planning and Adaptability/Flexibility (GDC/PAF) factor, does not motivate employees as high as the IRC factor. GDC/PAF consists of planning work related issues and getting employees to work together in achieving the work objective set. Based on the open ended questionnaire, the management thinks that motivated employees and teamwork is important to achieve work successes and encourages teamwork by encouraging employees to take work ownership and take responsibility for success and failure. It is recommended that the management works on the IRC by spending time with the employees to building a good relationship at a personal level. It is recommended that while teamwork does enable employee motivation, a high level of group cohesiveness and its impact on motivation and performance bears further investigation.
