Abstract
|
The purpose of this study is to investigate the key determinant factors that affect the turnover intentions. This study aims to investigate how significant are the working environment and culture, job stressors, career pathway and prospect, reward & recognition, affecting the turnover intentions among the blue collar workers in private healthcare industry in Penang. Four hypotheses were tested among the blue collar workers in four private hospitals in Penang.
A total of 65 valid respondents out of 80 the survey questionnaires distributed in 4 private hospitals in Penang. Majority of the respondents were hospital staff (73.8%); female (73.8%); married (63.1%); with annual income lower than RM50k (81.6%).
Most of the respondents have more than 5 years working experience in healthcare (65%).
The outcome of the analytical results did not support all the formulated hypotheses. The predictors, namely i) the working environment & culture and ii) role stressors were found to be not supporting the hypotheses. The retest revealed that certain factors worked in other similar settings overseas did not seem to apply in local settings.
xi
The finding indicated amongst the two significant factors that the “reward and recognition” (R&R) is still more significant if compared with the “understanding of future career pathway and prospects”. The research study shows that in order to cut down the turnover rate, promote a sound R&R programme and formulating a career pathway or showing the future prospect of the staff via training and development plan that will help to retain the staff.
Further statistical analysis of how much the demographic background of respondents using the same data could be performed in the study. The value and perception between different groups may be widely diverse. For future research, the unit of analysis would be more specific, and focused on certain work groups or professions in the private healthcare set up. The research methodology of study can be longitudinal viz. retest over a period. The larger sample size extended to other related institutions like hospice, private clinics, wellness centre, private nursing home and etc.
