Title Determinants of adoption of generating power from solar panels among residential home in Penang / Ong Eng San
Abstract This paper aims to study what are the determinants that will influence the adoption of solar panels in generating electricity for residential use in Penang. The study approach is using quantitative method and exploring how consumer behaviour, regulation, social, costs, access to information may affect the consumers in Penang, Malaysia into adoption of solar panels in generating electricity for residential use. About 365 questionnaires were distributed by emails to target at home owners. Results indicate that adoption of solar panels in generating electricity for residential use consists of five determinants which are market attitude, regulation, costs, access to information and social. All determinants are positively related to adoption of generating electricity from solar panel at home except costs. Penang homeowners are the only population studied and it is advisable future studies should consider a larger population such as other states. Also different target population should be studied such as lesser population per square kilometre of land. There is no positive relationship between costs of solar panel with adoption of solar panels in generating electricity for residential use. Consumer behaviour is indifferent between power produced from fossil fuel and renewable energy based is a concern. The government has to take steps to re-look into redeveloping its policies or take a more aggressive approach on the solar panel industry and its framework to better provide the infrastructure needs in order to fully embrace solar panel technology. Compared to European countries Malaysia culture and geographical situation is unique and has its own unique advantageous which the western country don’t have such as lots of sun light throughout the year.
