Study of employee engagement in DM / Teh, Choon Leong

Abstract
|
Employee engagement can be seen as a combination of both commitment
and involvement the employees have towards their organization and its values. The
purpose of this study is to examine the level of employee engagement in Digital
Media (DM) Operation Plant in Penang. Engaged employees are emotionally
attached to their organization and highly involved in their job with a great
enthusiasm for the success of their employer, and willing to go the extra mile
beyond the employment contractual agreement.
A literature review study was carried out in order to acquire a detailed
understanding on this subject and uncover factors that influence employee
engagement. A survey was carried out through structured questionnaires, with a total
sample size of 84 employees working in DM. The sample frame focused on four
Research &Development (R&D) Process Departments namely Cleaning
Department, Sputter Department, Lubricant Department and Testing Department.
Through the statistical analysis, it was found that the level of engagement in
DM in all four departments was equally low at around 6% to 8%, majority of them
still ‘Not-Engaged’. The organization should continue to enhance the strong factors
that drive employee engagement like “Team work”, “Personal relationship with
Managers” and “Employee Development”. Some of the areas that need further
attention include “Career Growth Opportunities” and fairness in staff promotion.
There are ways in which DM can work towards higher employee engagement level
without incurring additional cost if there is determination to focus on this issue.
