The purpose of this paper is to examine buying behaviour towards reduction subsidy
based on demographic. This study also seeks to examine awareness and impact of the
consumers towards subsidies given by the government. A questionnaire was developed
and distribute to 97 respondents and 66 responses were used for analysis of this study.
The result indicated that Malaysia citizens have high awareness on fuel, gas and sugar
subsidy cuts. The finding also shows that subsidy cuts have negative welfare impact on
the poor and low income group when food and fuel is higher. This study is useful to
marketers of grocery products that wish to target in low and middle income consumers as
they could plan their marketing strategy in such as way align with the reform of spending
behaviour towards policy of subsidy change
