Abstract
|
The purpose of this study was to examine the reasons why parents choose to send their children to homeschool centres over Malaysian public schools. The study identified pedagogy and educational philosophy to be factors that influence parental decisions. The objective of this study is also to investigate how homeschool centres meet the specific needs of children. A mixed method approach was used to collect and analyse data from 52 parents across 3 homeschool centres in Penang, Malaysia. The quantitative method included the use of survey questionnaires and descriptive analysis. The qualitative method included the use of follow-up interviews and the examination of common themes and patterns across the data. The results showed that parents choose to send their children to homeschool centres because of the poor learning environment in Malaysian public schools. Other significant reasons include parents who have children with special needs, learning disabilities, or behavioural problems. Parents are also influenced by both the pedagogy and educational philosophy of homeschool centres. Further explanations on how homeschool centres meet the needs of learners, along with study limitations, and directions for future research were discussed..
