Title Factors that Influence the usage of app-based land transportation by commuters in Penang. / Jan Einar Ingvald Fonacier Fellizar.
Abstract Understanding the factors that influence commuter’s choice to select App-Based Land transportation serves to improve its utilization as a part of the mass-transport system. This research analyzes factors affecting behavioral intent towards App-based Land transportation services and its the effects on commuters’ decision making processes using a survey questionnaire. The objectives of this research are to develop a framework of factors and its effects on the decision-making process of commuters on the island. This study contributes to the literature regarding Penang’s public transportation system using Booking Cost, Service Quality, Safety & Security, Knowledge, Convenience and Transportation service Image. These factors and framework based on existing studies and literature and tested through Multiple regression. The factors were developed based on the assumptions of the Theory of Reasoned Action, the Theory of Planned Behavior and the utility theory, and were refined though claims of existing literature and adopted for the local public transportation system. The data was collected through an online survey completed by 60 respondents. Reliability, correlation analysis and Multiple regression were used to analyze the data. The correlation analysis shows all the factors positively related to behavioral intent. While the results of the regression shows only Booking cost and Transportation provider image as providing the strongest positive predictors of commuters’ behavioral intent to use the app-based Land transportation services. Service Quality, Safety & Security, Knowledge and Convenience though positively related did not directly influence commuter’s Behavioral intent. These findings show that Transport companies should focus on their service pricing and transportation image to secure some of the commuter’s favor to improve their businesses. In addition, there are key limitations and further improvements to the study that have been documented for future transportation studies.
