Abstract Malaysia is one of the countries that has the highest percentage of vehicle ownership of each household in the world. To own a vehicle in a country like Malaysia is not easy not because of the high vehicle selling price but due to the income level of each individual. Therefore it is common for consumers to purchase a vehicle via financing with the bank. The financing facility is known as hire purchase finance. The financial institution in Malaysia which comprises of credit companies, local banks and foreign banks. Only the foreign banks never provide hire purchase financing to consumers. With the absence of foreign bank presence in Malaysia hire purchase market, the competition among the market players still stiff. Moreover, increasing in consumers’ awareness enable the consumer become more demanding in selection on hire purchase financier. As a result of this to understand their selection criteria is important to the hire purchase financiers. This research is aim to study the main selection criteria of the consumers in Johor. The criteria in this study are interest, promotion and recommendation. A survey was conducted in Johor and there were 87 respondents participated. It is to study which criteria is the most important while they make selection on hire purchase financiers. The result of study shows that interest is the most important criteria to the consumers in Johor and this is consistent with the previous studies by other researcher on other financial products. Promotion by the bank and recommendation from third party are also the main criteria to the consumers in Johor. At the last chapter of this research some recommendation also provided by researcher for hire purchase financiers to take into consideration in order to improve their competitive edge in the competition. The limitation of this research is only study on the three independent variables. There are still other factors that consumers will take into consideration while they making the selection decision such as location of the bank, convenience and facility infrastructure provided by the bank.
