Abstract This study aims to identify the impact of leadership towards employee performance and job retention in the shipping industrial in Sarawak, Malaysia. The shipping industry has been faced with poor performance with many service operators forced to exit the market over last 6 years. The challenges faced today called for leadership to steer companies through rough seas ahead in shipping industry and to maintain business sustainability. This research proposal will explore the task-oriented and relationship-oriented leadership behaviors, and theories in identifying their impacts on performances and job retention in the shipping organization. Qualitative approach with open-ended questionnaire has been applied in this research to discover further yet comprehensive and in-depth research findings. A total of fourteen informants from a shipping company in Kuching have participated in this study. There are five research questions that have been constructed. The main objective of this study is to explore factors that lead to staff retention and staff performance. It is important to explore the factors regarding an employee of shipping company to stay or leave an organization as key driving force to productivity and in achieving desired performance. The need to explore the factors for employee retention shall shade positive efforts in the preservation of skilled and experienced employees and in company initiative programs towards talent development and management. Thus, its implications must be considered and weighed upon in creating valuable human resource pool for more competitive demands of markets ahead. Lastly, some relevant recommendations to HR practitioner and future researches to ensure the greatest human asset are developed in the shipping industry in Malaysia.
