Title Mentoring through a whole brain® model at private companies in Malaysia: an empirical study./ Lim Ciu Yun.
Abstract The major purpose of this study was, through an empirical approach, to determine factors that affect mentor’s retention in private companies in Malaysia. The research also investigated on trends of preferred thinking style and training needs from the perspective of the mentor. Employees of small medium enterprises and multinational companies’ participated this empirical study. The researcher used simplified Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI) or Whole Brain® Model to determine thinking preference style as an induction screening prior to mentoring sessions. There is a knowledge gap between mentoring dimensions and mentor retention in the Malaysian context. This study identified four dimensions in mentoring such as mentoring style, mentor dedication, mentor self-assessment and mentor motivation. The dimensions are used to assess mentor retention of mentor. Mentors also participated on implication of training needs to incorporate simplified Whole Brain® Model in the mentoring process. This proposal has not been incorporated in real-time environment. The findings revealed interesting results in response to the introduction of the Whole Brain® Model in private companies in Malaysia. Managers and males both have preferred thinking style for Quadrant A and B, while executives and females both have preferred thinking style for Quadrant C and D. The results showed that mentoring style, mentor dedication and mentor training needs have significant relationship with mentor retention. This indicates the feasibility of to incorporating the Whole Brain® Model as part of the training for mentors. The study was intended to show how mentors can perform from a mental preference perspective. The results of this research can help mentors to recruit, train and coach mentees more effectively. This in return gives mentors a sense of achievement and job satisfaction. As such, the Whole Brain® Model might help to create more employment support and economic development leading to a competent society.
