Title Reading strategies among rural bilingual students / Emile Peter Lourdes E. P. Joseph
Abstract The aim of the study is to investigate the reading strategies of bilingual students in the area of metacognitive and cognitive strategies in the proces of learning ESL in Malaysia. The objective is to improve their comprehension to a higher level. The investigation used a mixsed method design which involves instruments such as questionnaire and interviews. The Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) by Mokhtari and Reichard (2002) was used as the instrument to collect data on the student’s usage of reading strategies. This study was conducted at SMK Pusing involving 60 Form 2 students involving male and female. Based on the findings, the students had used various reading strategies. But there seem to be a problem when reading strategies are used by good and poor students when reading comprehension. Findings conclude that students use more of problem-solving strategies and support strategies. Both good and poor students have difficulty in global reading strategies. Therefore, this research findings intends to guide both the good and poor readers to use more of other strategies which could improve their comprehension Administrators and teachers play an important role in finding out the proper reading strategies so that comprehension could be improved for the good and poor students.
