Title A scientometrics approach to business studies : from productivity to the influence of scientific business research on economic growth of Malaysia / Yap Kien Pong
Abstract The aim of this study was to examine the Malaysian productivity in the field of business related research and to determine the relationship between the scientific research outputs and economic growth in Malaysia. In this study, a total of 1184 publications affiliated to Malaysian addresses from the Web of Science database for a period of 34 years (1980-2014) were sampled and analyzed. The study also explored numbers of publications and citations trends, publication types and languages, authorship and collaboration patterns, core journals, fields of study and its trend, keywords and relationship between the business research outputs and the economic growth of Malaysia using scientometrics approaches. The results showed increasing trends on the numbers of publications and citations received which most of it were published in proceedings and contributed by a numbers of highly productive authors. Majority of the publications were independently produced by Institutions of higher learning with marginal numbers were internationally collaborated mainly with the authors from United States, Europe and Asia-Pacific regions. Nevertheless, the multi-authors phenomenon was relatively limited. The keywords and Keywords Plus, a relatively newer approach to examine the current trend of research have identified a numbers of key terms which were distributed over 24 research areas and 41 Web of Science categories. Interestingly, the findings showed strong correlation between research outputs and economic growth. Further linear regression analysis has demonstrated a statistically significant predictive model between these two variables. The findings of this study have important implications on the direction of future business related research, either assisting business researchers, both public and private to plan and strategize their research plan or providing important information in policy making to improve the economic growth of Malaysia.
