Abstract
|
The purpose of this case study is to examine the impact of communication and choice of communication media on virtual project team effectiveness, and its influence on team cohesion. Managing virtual teams is more challenging compared to managing traditional or co-located teams, as communication problems are more inherent and the impact greater in virtual teams. The subject of this study is a local Bank in Malaysia that is expanding within ASEAN region. Virtual project teams are common in the bank, especially for software development projects. Several of its regional projects have encountered problems during implementation and communication issues are some of the causes noted.
This is an observational case study with data collected from a sample population of project team members with experience working with virtual project teams. The researcher used a custom designed web-based questionnaire to collect primary data from two separate sampling frames, the first consisting of staff members of the case study firm and the other from external project managers who are members of MSCPMP Circle, a body of certified project managers.
This case study has provided the researcher with an insight to the communication and team cohesion issues faced by the bank. The results validated the findings from past researchers that communication has a great impact on virtual project outcome, and team cohesion will improve with better communication. Suggested recommendations to overcome the problems include measures to address issues on the three factors of productivity, namely people, process and technology.
