Title The relatioship of total quality management practices and contractor's organisational performance in Penang second bride design and build project / Cheng Kim Bong
Abstract The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between the Total Quality Management (TQM) practices and organisational performance in Penang Second Bridge project. TQM practices adopted from Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) criteria are the independent variables comprises of leadership, strategic planning, customer focus, information and analysis, people management, and process management. The dependent variable is the organisational performance. The proposed hypotheses were tested for positively significant relationship between TQM practices and performance. A total of 190 questionnaires were distributed to those that are involved in the project from the period between the fourth weeks of August 2011 and collected by end of September 2011. 172 responded with a response rate of 91%. The collected data were analysed using multivariate analysis adopting Software Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 17.0. The collected data were subjected to factor analysis, reliability analysis, descriptive analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. The multiple regression analysis revealed that people management, information and analysis, customer focus, leadership and strategic planning were positively significantly related to performance. However, the process management was observed to be not positively significantly related to performance. Hence, hypotheses H1a, H1b, H1c, H1d, and H1e were supported and H1f was not supported. From the theoretical perspective, the results of this research was supported by the findings that MBNQA criteria were consistent predictors of organisational performance (Darryl D. Wilson et al, 2000). For the managerial implications, people management was found to be the most siginificant factor contributing to performance followed by information and analysis, customer focus, leadership, and strategic planning. The limitation of the study and suggestion for future study were also laid down. In conclusion, the outcome of the study could provide valuable knowledge to top management to refine on TQM practices to improve on performance.
