Compension satisfaction, job stress and intention to leave : a case study of a private university in Malaysia / Tan Li Chin

Abstract
|
Employees’ intention to leave had been a popular topic in organization behavior
research. Understand the factors that influence employees’ intention to leave play an
important role in retaining quality staffs. The purpose of this study was to investigate
the relationship between compensation satisfaction, job stress and intention to leave
among the non-academic staffs in a private university in Malaysia. The compensation
satisfaction consists of pay satisfaction and benefit satisfaction. This study was based
on theories of exchange (Gouldner, 1960; Blau, 1964). Three hypothesized were
tested in this study with a sample of 107 non-academic staffs randomly selected from
all administrative departments in the university. Questionnaires survey was used in
this study. The results from regression analyses discovered that all the independent
variables were significantly related to intention to leave. The findings revealed that
compensation satisfaction was significant negatively related to intention to leave. Pay
satisfaction has the highest influence to intention to leave. Benefit satisfaction has the
least influence to intention to leave. Besides, the results also indicated that job stress
was significant positively related to intention to leave. An effective retention strategy
should be implemented to reduce employees’ turnover intention. The findings from
this study will be useful for the university to improve their human resource
management in order to stay competitiveness in the global market.
