The perception of employability skills : a survey of SMK Taman Connaught students / Tan Foo Chong

Abstract
|
The purpose of this research is to investigate the perceptions of students studied in
SMK Taman Connaught, a public secondary school in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur about
the important employability skills to get a decent job upon leaving school. There are
about 78 upper secondary school students were chosen as a sample this research. The
data was collected by structured close-ended questionnaires using convenient
sampling method. Statistical Analysis tool - SPSS Version 15 for Windows was used
to perform descriptive statistics and inferential analysis on the data such as
Reliability Test, and Independent sample t-Test. The demographic analysis results
showed that the majority of the respondents are female, upper secondary, science
stream students without any working experience and have plans to further study to
higher education after complete the secondary education.
The findings of descriptive statistics showed that the SMK Taman Connaught
students’ perception on the most important employability skills to secure a decent job
are Responsibility personality, English reading and writing skills, English
conversation skill, Good working attitude personality, Problem solving skill,
Decision making skill, Team spirit personality, and Good customer service skill, and
the majority of the students did not perceive the Information and Communication
Technology skills are one of the essential employability skills.
The findings of inferentialanalysis showed that there was no significant difference
between male and female students in perception on accepting English reading &
writing skills and ability to operate office application software skill are one of the
important employability skills, but there is significant difference in perception
between male and female onfast learning skill. There was no significant difference
between Science and Art students in perception on accepting English reading and
writing skills, Good working attitudes and ability to operate office application
software skill are the important employability skills to secure a decent job, but there
is significant difference in perception between Science and Art students on Problem
Solving skill.
The study suggests that vocational training service providers should exploit the
survey findings to identify the employability skills mismatch problemsbetween the
students and employers, and design industry driven skills based education
programme that meet the expectation of today’s employers. The vocational training
service providers especially specialize in Information & Communication technology
should develop vocational education programme to help secondary school students to
acquire the important ICT skills required by employers in the job market such as
ability to operate personal computer system, ability to operate Windows operating
system software, ability to operate Office Application software, ability to operate
electronic mail application software, keyboard typing skill and simple computer
hardware and software troubleshooting skills.
