Title The perceptions of primary school heads towards stakeholders’ acceptance levels of School Based Assessment (SBA) system. / Salendra Dev A/L Mahadevan
Abstract The purpose of this research is to investigate the perceptions of primary school heads towards School Based Assessment (SBA) among stakeholders, and the challenges faced during SBA implementation. The school heads’ perceptions on the students, teachers and parents acceptance levels towards SBA implementation and school heads’ own implementation challenges faced are examined. This study was carried out among primary school heads in Selangor, Malaysia. From a sample of 100 schools randomly selected from the 659 schools altogether in Selangor, a number of 33 respondentsgave their responses in the survey. Data was collected using questionnaires administered online via email. Results reveal that the school heads have a favourable perception of SBA acceptance among all the three stakeholders in general. However, the school heads’ perceptions towards parents are found to have the lowest level of SBA acceptance, among the three stakeholders. Further, the perception of school heads is that overcrowding of students in classrooms is a major factor in influencing SBA implementation. A contradiction is seen, where on one hand teachers’ competency levels due to low confidence levels is seen as another important challenge to overcome, but increasing the allocation for teacher training time is not seen as important by the school heads. Hence, here a potential area for further studies is identified. Finally, recommendations are also made on how school heads can further improve SBA acceptance levels in their schools.
