Title Effectiveness of using online games strategy to improve basic skills in Mathematics. / Mahlini Devi A/P Rajah
Abstract Problem: This year, I was given Standard Five Terra to teach Mathematics. What I notice with them is that they take a longer time to count basic maths skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. I was thinking whether alternative method such as online game would help them to fasten and strengthen their skills. This problem leads me to this study. One of the main factors that lead to this problem is lack of using alternative methods in teaching and practicing the basic skills as well as to attract students’ interest in Mathematics. This study discusses how to attract and fasten students to the process teaching and learning of basic mathematical skills as well as strengthening standard five students’ basic mathematical skills through the method of online game. Methods: Design Research approach used was quantitative and research design was a comparative pre-test and post-test experimental design. The design of the study allowed for the opportunity to answer the main research question regarding the effect of online games versus traditional modes. Pre-test was done by assessing their skill before exposing them to online games. Post-test was done after four hours (4 classes) of online games that require the students to count fast and accurately in order to win the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division race. Results: There is significant increase in score in post-test results. As expected, the time taken was also lesser comparing with the pre-test. Results on the analysis using Paired sample t-test comparing the time and score shows that there is an increase in score and reduce in time.
