Title Gender differences in anxiety level in spoken English Language: a case study. / Grace Lee May Ling
Abstract Have a good command of English has been a crucial skill for graduates to have in order to become valuable employees. It is alarming that most Malaysian graduates are unable to speak fluent English after completing their tertiary studies. This paper aims to investigate the anxiety level of college students in speaking English and determine whether there is any significant difference between male and female students in terms of their speaking anxiety. For this quantitative research, 297 complete questionnaires were collected from diploma students in a higher education institution in Johor. Second Language Speaking Anxiety Scale (SLSAS) by Woodrow (2006) was used to collect data from the research samples. Based on the results, it was concluded that college students experienced a moderate level of anxiety when they speak English as a second language. There is a significant statistically difference between genders in relation to their anxiety levels in spoken English. The findings from this study would be beneficial to students, educators, and administrators of educational institutions in terms of improving the standards of English education in Malaysian classrooms.
