Title Teachers’ perceptions toward teaching Malaysian history in cultivating patriotism among upper primary students. / Foong Chui Yean
Abstract The abstract nature of the history subject has made teaching a challenge, which reduced its effectiveness in the cultivation of patriotism among young students. Teachers’ perceptions of teaching influenced their choice of teaching practices and will reflect concomitantly in the effectiveness of their teaching. However, the impact of teachers’ perceptions of teaching practices in history classes in the context of Malaysia is not well researched. Hence the present study aims to investigate teachers’ perception of teaching Malaysian history in cultivating patriotism among upper primary students. Besides, this study would like to find out the challenges while teaching the history subject to primary students. The researcher collected data using semi-structured interviews with ten history teachers from public primary schools in the Perak State. Data was analysed using the Thematic Analysis method and present data by organising them under different themes. The present study found that teachers generally have positive perceptions towards teaching the history subject in cultivating patriotism. They believed that the elements of patriotism such as national identity, a sense of belonging, loyalty, and discipline are teachable. Teachers’ perceptions of challenges on teaching history to primary students included those from parents and students, teachers themselves, curriculum and environment. In conclusion, the teachers from the present study suggested that the history textbooks need a revision to meet students’ learning needs. Besides, teachers believed that they need continuous professional development programs to ensure they have the right skills to teach effectively.
