Title Malaysian ICT industry job insecurity / Freddy Moses.
Abstract The ICT Industry as it is a fast moving and at the same time assisting many other industries to modernise, provide more efficient solutions and outcome especially in the local Malaysian context. Hence Job Insecurity creates fear since the ICT jobs are changing and evolving at a fast pace making it a concern of many quarters from employers, employees, government, parents and students. The job insecurity from an employee’s point of view which will be a future career selection for someone leaving school while on the other end, the employers trying balance managing turnover and having adequate supply to fill the vacant current and future jobs. The government from another angle strives, making sure the economical trigger by the ICT industries are in place by the emphasis on the ICT jobs, simulating the countries’ economics growth and revenue. In this study the main groups focus are the employees and the job insecurity faced by them and how it affects them and their performance which later compounds to the organization, the industry and finally the nation. The fear of job insecurity is such it deteriorates performance and its effects, causes a compounding problems in the local ICT industry. These problems of the fear of losing one’s job or source of income, individual performance which later sums up and impacts the organizational performance, communications and external factor for example technological change and cost control or cost reduction. The research objective was to determine the job insecurity level and the areas that are of concern most. Hence it could assist to find remedies for employees and employers, not forgetting the other quarters like government, NGO’s, social groups and other quarters to make use of the findings to create a better local ICT ecosystem. In this research, a cross sectional method with hypothesis formed from the literature review. The questionnaires are of quantitative in nature to specify and remain focused on the studies scope. This research was able to gather 114 respondents which were collected through the available Google Form tool which was distributed via email and WhatsApp mediums. The analysis using the descriptive statistics looking at the overall mean score for job insecurity which was at 3.87 from a maximum score of 5 and the minimum score is 1. The other tests which was carried out are the Correlation test and Hypothesis testing by Means (ANOVA). These test analyses the heterogeneity of data and used to prove the hypothesis on the established variables for this research. The results provided information such as trainings and communications as essential and needs to be enhanced in the local ICT organisation to provide skill sets in building oneself via both soft and technical skills to be able to cope with job insecurity. The setting of systematic communication channels within the organization helps by leap and bounds to address the job insecurity within an organization and largely for the ICT industry.
