Title Awareness of computer security among SME in Johor Bahru / Tan Yew Hang
Abstract Computer had become an essential tools for normal office work and internet adoption grew exponentially every year. Over the years, business operation had grew to be more complicated and in order for Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) to stay competitive in market, they preferred Information Communications Technology (ICT) to boost their business process and reduce operation overhead cost. Refer to SME annual report 2016, internet service adoption in SME had achieved 90.1% and Johor is one of the top 3 SME establishment states. However, ICT adoption had been challenged by security incidents where malware infection had grew exponentially over years. Human factors stay to be the most vulnerable element in an organisation to breach computer security system. Since Malaysia is moving towards developed digital economy by 2020, human factor will still be the last defence to all kinds of malicious attack. This study focus on user awareness of computer security among SME companies and readiness to face new form of cyberattack. Security awareness model, which is simplified model of Health Belief Model (HBM), will be used as theoretical model to test further on influence of demographic variables to computer security awareness. Finding shows that gender has positive relationship with computer security awareness. This research found that personal factor and organization culture are not significant related to computer security awareness but level of exposure in security environment is significantly influence the result of the study. Findings from this study shows that perceived severity level of computer users in Johor Bahru is above average and male respondents are more security aware. Respondents also perceived that their computer is secured and better self-efficacy level on identify any suspicious email attachment. Findings also shows that respondents are aware on current security practice but do not know how to deal with latest security threats. In overall view, low relationship between variables (< 0.5) shows that computer security awareness for SME Company in Johor Bahru might be influenced by other factors which is not covered under this study. Several recommendations were included in this study to help SME Company to overcome latest security threats and improve computer security awareness in Johor Bahru, such as perform security assessment to tighten control, apply latest security patch and antivirus, third party IT audit and penetration testing, restrict outsiders communication to an authorised and responsible person, continuous education and development.
