Labuan as an emerging financial centre : a comparative study with Hong Kong / Tan Thiam Lee
|
Abstract
|
Financial centre is an essential element for a country to gain competitive power in the financial world. It also acts as a backbone to the country’s economy when appealing to international business community in choosing the jurisdiction for their businesses. This study aims to analyse whether the five key factors of competitiveness identified in the GFCI 20 are the key competitive factors for Labuan to continue emerge as a financial centre. From the previous study, the five factors identified appealed to be significant towards the competitiveness of other financial centre. Using correlation and regression analysis, this study found that: First, this business environment factors, financial sector development, human capital, infrastructure factors, reputational factors are the contributor towards the competitiveness of Labuan IBFC; Secondly, human capital has a negative relationship towards the competitiveness of Labuan IBFC. Additionally, five sectors, namely banking industry, insurance market, capital market, stock market and registered companies has been selected for sectorial study. Secondary data for both Labuan and Hong Kong has been compiled from 2008 to 2015 for comparative purposes. The comparative study found that: First, Labuan is a young but emerging financial centre; Secondly, Labuan has Islamic related products which is not available in Hong Kong which is an added advantage for Labuan to compete in the financial world. Besides, through interviews conducted with three key informants from Labuan IBFC, the results revealed that the five key factors of competitiveness identified in the GFCI 20 has significant impact on the competitiveness of Labuan IBFC. Lastly, the results from this study served as valuable reference to the Labuan IBFC and the decision makers and also the practitioners in making Labuan IBFC a more competitive financial centre.
