Title Teaching English for preschool students afflicted with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) / Sharmila Bala Subramaniam
Abstract This study intends to identify preschool teachers’ knowledge on ADHD, their perceptions on the suitable learning environment and appropriate teaching strategies and techniques that can be used to teach English for students with ADHD. The study involved a number of public and private preschool teachers within the vicinity of Butterworth, Penang. A total of 16 preschool teachers who taught English and 34 students afflicted with ADHD were identified and selected to be involved in this study. The data was collected using questionnaire which consist of two parts. Part 1 consist of biographical questions whereas Part 2 consists of survey questions regarding preschool teachers knowledge and perceptions on ADHD, the learning environment and teaching methodologies that are most preferred and commonly used in teaching English for ADHD students. The collected data were than analysed by using tables, pie chart, column chart and descriptive statistics. Generally, the findings showed that preschool teachers do have some knowledge on ADHD, however they were unsure about the causes of this disorder. Also, learning environment as well as teaching strategies and techniques are significantly important in determining the successfulness of ADHD students in learning and acquiring English language. Besides that, analysis also showed that ADHD students were able to learn English when conventional methods were used compared to the conservative way of learning. In conclusion, preschool teachers do have some knowledge on ADHD however it is not sufficient enough. Generally, preschool teachers determined the learning environment and teaching strategies for ADHD students based on their experience and educational background rather than their knowledge on ADHD itself. Finally, this study provides recommendations for schools, teachers and parents in order to help them deal and teach students afflicted with ADHD successfully.
