Title A study of factors impacting total safety culture on safety performance / Choong Beng Keat
Abstract In current competitive, face-paced and economically challenged business environment, safety managers are asked to collaborate to reduce the number of accidents to save cost. [PROBLEM] The problem is safety managers may not know exactly the factors that influence safety performance. To help safety practitioners and managers implement a successful OSH management system, it is crucial that they know what the factors that have the most positive impact on the organization’s safety performances. [OBJECTIVE] The objective of this study is identify the factors influencing safety performance. The factors are employee commitment, employee empowerment, open communication, management support and safety trainings. The research methodology consists of a cross-sectional study. Data was collected using an online questionnaire service and administered through WhatsApp’s group and Facebook’ contact. The response rate was 77% (77/100). The sample was from the researcher’s network. Data collected were analysed using statistical instruments like factorial and descriptive analysis, ANOVA, Cronbach’s Alpha reliability tests, Pearson Correlation Measure and various regressions analysis to determine the reliability and relationship of the variables. The unit of analysis is professional individuals. The findings indicated the factors under study (i.e. employee commitment, employment empowerment, open communication, management support and training) all have significant influence on an organization’s safety performance. Employee commitment, open communication and training were found to be more significant towards safety culture. Demographic analysis did not show any strong associations with safety performance except an employee length of service in the company and type of company ownership (local vs foreign). The predictive model indicated that training and management support are significant predictors of safety performance. Safety culture turned out to be an intervening variable when hierarchical regression were applied to test the intervening relationship. This study is limited by the small sample size, the judgemental sampling method and the initial pre-determined numbers of factors studied. Future similar research should emphasize on larger sample size, quota sampling and other factors excluded in this study and may have an impact of safety performance (i.e. financial position of the company, qualification and experience of safety managers and income and educational levels of sample). Overall, this study has met the research objectives and provided a solution to the problem which is to provide safety managers with an in-depth understanding of the factors affecting safety performance to improve sand achieve safety performance goals
