Title Towards an effective communication between product development and final manufacturing process - a case study of a semiconductor firm / Benny Tan Chen Tat
Abstract This paper is aimed to study the communication barriers that are affecting the communication effectiveness that leads to poor productivity in a semiconductor manufacturing firm. This study helps the company to seek opportunities to improve the communication effectiveness by understanding the employees’ perception and constraints towards an effective communication at work. After reviewing a number of literatures, it was observed that communication barriers that affect the communication effectiveness in a multinational company are physical barriers, system design faults, attitudinal barriers and language and culture differences. In addition, communication effectiveness is led to productivity of the company where it may delay project and task execution. Based on these factors, the researcher has proposed a theoretical framework of communication effectiveness before continuing the research. A survey was conducted among the production and product engineer and all necessary data and information were collected via a specific designed questionnaire. The study involved mainly qualitative analysis which was aimed at answering the specific research questions framed in this paper. The results indicate that organization management is the main significant factor that causes engineers to multitask that causes them to overlook due to multiple project distraction. Besides that, overload engineers tend to forget or leave out important information that causes more time to clarify or execute the task or project. The organization structure is also the root cause of different procedures on different sites that causes confusion and complications between the engineers. After consolidating the findings, the study ends with some recommendations for communication effectiveness improvement. The entire project has taken about five months to complete and it began in January 2015.
