Title An analysis of the 13th Malaysian general election outcome / Tengku Nurariffin Bin Tengku Baharudin
Abstract “With the Chinese Tsunami, we couldn’t do anything”. Those were the words of Prime Minister Najib during the press conference held after midnight on the 6th of May this year after the ruling coalition, Barisan Nasional (BN), was able to form the government after winning with a simple majority. “Chinese Tsunami”, the term used in the statement, opened the floodgates of comments, critiques and interpretations on what it really means to a nation like Malaysia. Even before the elections, many analysts had been predicting that GE13 was going to be one of the most closely contested. During the campaigning period, some even regarded it as the ‘dirtiest election in history’. In the run-up to the GE13, there had been countless criticisms and calls by various quarters, mostly from the opposition-backed civil society movements, on the need for electoral reform as there are apparent weaknesses in the system and these are said to be a major hindrances in achieving a free, clean and fair election. The objective of the study is to gain insight and construe the voting outcome of the Malaysian 13th General Election (GE13) as well as other factors that could have affected the election based on extensive examination of secondary data. On overall, it was found out that the term used by Prime Minister can be substantiated as evidence showed there is drastic sway of Chinese voters towards Pakatan Rakyat. As a result, the opposition almost has the monopoly of the Chinese votes and the BN survived mainly on non-Chinese votes.
