Abstract
|
This paper is aimed to examine the employees’ perceptions of Total Quality Management (TQM) practices and its effect on job satisfaction within manufacturing industry in Northern State of Malaysia. After reviewing a number of literatures on TQM practices, it was observed that not much examines this scope of investigative study. Thus, the proposed model was developed with the intention of to strengthening and reaffirming this relationship within a local context.
The paper proposes five hypotheses and tests on the relationship between TQM practices and job satisfaction. The study used self-completed questionnaires, distributed within few manufacturing companies. The study sample consisted of 100 participants, resulting in a response rate of 58%. Data were analysed by using correlation and multiple regression analysis methods.
The findings discovered that training and education, customer focus and cooperation and teamwork are positive associated with employees’ job satisfaction. It was also found that customer focus was perceived as a prevailing TQM practices, improvement in job satisfaction levels were substantial. Further, the outcome of the multiple regression analysis reinforces the proposed model based on the empirically validated soft TQM instruments, which are reliable and valid.
The finding could be useful as an example of a methodology that might be used to pursue the degree of TQM effects on job satisfaction. An organization could use this instrument to do a pre-test standard measurement, and then constantly rearrange it to recognize variations correlated with TQM effects.
