Abstract
|
The study examines the success and failure factors of CMMI implementation in
multimedia design and manufacturing company and presents best practices for
making CMMI implementation successful. With intensive literature review of human,
organisational and implementation factors, a survey questionnaire was developed on
four independent variables (management commitment, staff involvement, allocated
resources and setting SPI goals) and one dependent variable (Software Process
improvement (SPI) success). A total of 64 questionnaires were distributed to all
staffs of different hierarchical level working in Research and Development (R&D) in
between first to third of October. Only 50 usable questionnaires were received
yielding response rate of 64%. Interviews with existing experienced staffs and
reviews of documents, published records and templates were also conducted to get
insight how company failed its CMMI implementation. All collected data were
analysed using descriptive analysis, frequency analysis and content analysis. In
addition, bootstrap sampling is used by enlarging the sample size to 100 in order to
increase accuracy and confidence level. The findings show that allocated resource is
the most important factor for success of CMMI implementation and it contrasts with
findings of original study where staff involvement is found to be the most important.
It is also revealed that factors management commitment, staff involvement and
setting SPI goals are generally important which have impact on CMMI
implementation. The study also identified and discussed four major failures (lack of
support from top management, lack of participation from staffs in CMMI, excessive
documentation and formality and staff turnover) which contributed to failure of
CMMI implementation in multimedia design and manufacturing company. In
addition, best practices were also described which would help to overcome
challenges and ensuring success of CMMI implementation. Recommendation and
future work were also presented in this study. Finally, conclusion is drawn from all
the findings and a good understanding of all factors will help organisations to
accelerate between CMMI levels on time and at low costs.
