|
Abstract
|
This research was performed to find out whether the 10 factors that influence stress
among IT professionals as stated by Rajeswari and Anantharaman (2003) prevalent
specifically in CSC Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. The survey was performed on a sample size of
35 CSCM IT employees via questionnaires as the medium. Data was collected and
analysed using Microsoft Excel 2003. A Cronbach Alpha of 0.67 on the reliability scale
on the data. Data was then analysed using the descriptive method as well as the
Correlation Method using the Pearson Correlation.
Results found that Fear of system being obsolete and unable to cope with new
technologies and systems to be the greatest contribution to stress among IT
professionals in CSCM.
Second factor is having to take technical risk in their work. Assuming more than one
role at work, spending too much time at work and family not being supportive are
among other factors that do contributed to stress but not significantly.
Working in a different environment, Lack of expertise at work, Team and Client
interaction are found not to affect the stress in anyway.
It is recommended that CSCM review the recently implementation of the Self Managed
teams where existing technical employees are required to assumed more than their role
of operations as well as to manage the team. Factors like spending too much time at
work, assuming more than one role, performing beyond their scope of work and having
to make risky decisions are a result of the implementation of self managed teams. This
can be seen where there is a high attrition rate among team leads. As compared to
before the implementation of Self managed teams.
On going training and information flow on new technologies as well as new systems
implemented to its employees ensure that they are up to date and are able to cope with
newer technologies. Knowledge transfer within the company and sharing of resources
globally and internally would reduce the cost of hiring and training.
From the research, the expectations of IT employees towards the company to reduce
their stress level are obvious. CSCM with its Human Resources Department and the IT
Department Product Line must work together to counter the stress among its IT
employees to ensure a reduction of cost in training and hiring as a result of attrition and
an ongoing improvement in their quality services and productivity as a result of good
employee well being.
