The product innovation of manufacturting SMEs in Penang / Chan Lee Chin
|
Abstract
|
The purposes of the study was first to provide a profiling of the
performance and characteristic of product innovation of manufacturing SMEs in
Penang by firm-size namely micro, small and medium and by technology level
namely low, medium-low, medium-high and high technology. The second objective
was to find out if there were any relationship of firm-size and technology level for
the business performance and characteristic of product innovation. This project was
initiated due to the importance of SME in Penang to foster a greater economic
growth in terms attraction of Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) and provide the
footprint for larger entrepreneurial economy.
Design/methodology/approach – 340 survey questionnaires distributed through
email and hard copy to business owners and managers of manufacturing SMEs in
Penang. The first part of the survey consists of questions regarding business
performance due to product innovation. The second part of the survey was using
another 8 characteristic to measure a firms’ product innovation characteristics. The
data is used to provide a profiling of the innovation of manufacturing SMEs in
Penang by firm-size and by technology-levels. The later part of the data analysis is
focus to find out if there are any relationship between firm-size and technologylevels
to the performance and characteristic of product innovation.
Findings – The profiling for business performance shows highest score for revenue
growth, sales volume growth and increased customer based. Improve profit margin
had the lowest score and increase customer satisfaction had the most diverse answers
among the companies. There was no significant correlation ship between firm-size
and to performance and characteristic of product innovation in manufacturing SMEs
in Penang. However, significant relationship is observed for technology-level for
characteristic of product innovation of following customer's specifications, the
product was not known and tried in the market, the product has technology newness,
it offer unique innovative features and the product has more uses.
Originality/value – The paper provides useful information on innovation
management for business owners and managers in manufacturing SMEs
