Abstract
|
Language anxiety has been a common phenomenon for learners who are learning English as a second language. Grounded in the self-determination theory, self-discrepancy theory, and action control theory, the relationship between second language motivational self-system (ideal L2 self, ought-to L2 self, and L2 learning experience) and L2 anxiety; and L2 learning experience as a mediator between ideal L2 self and L2 anxiety were investigated among the tertiary students who were studying English as second language in Penang. Overall, a total of 332 tertiary students from private colleges and universities participated in the research. The data was analysed using covariance-based structural equation modelling. The study results indicated that ideal L2 self and L2 learning experience are negatively related to L2 anxiety; whereas ought-to L2 self is positively related to L2 anxiety. Moreover, L2 learning experience also mediates the relationship between ideal L2 self and L2 anxiety. The findings of the study have provided significant theoretical, pedagogical, and methodological implications to educators and researchers who wish to alleviate L2 anxiety among English learners.
