Abstract
|
With the current increase in manufacturing costs, companies struggles to maintain positive profit margins to sustain a business. In order to maintain positive profits, companies usually opt to either cut cost or increase the price of the product. With the current increase in the number of galvanising plants in Malaysia, competition is high and by increasing the price, companies might lose market share, hence affecting negatively to the business. The other option to cut cost would be a better option because it is easier to manage and control as it only involves the internal shareholders of the manufacturing plant. Rejects in manufacturing is a form of wastage which adds to the manufacturing cost. In order to reduce rejects, quality management tools such as such Zero Defects programs or the six sigma concept are introduced to focus on decreasing the number of defects or rejects. This study seeks improvement opportunities by studying the rejection causes and will present improvement ideas to reduce rejects upon understanding the employees’ perception towards contributory factors of the galvanising process via a survey questionnaire and after analysing on past internal production quality rejects. With the questionnaire, the key factor that is affecting the production is determined and by analysing the galvanising plants’ quality rejection records, the critical galvanising process is determined. The results in this study shows that the key factor is determined to be the environmental factor and the critical galvanising process is the pre-treatment process. Based on the results, this specific area is further studied and improvements are suggested to reduce rejections. With the improvements suggested, the reduction in manufacturing costs will help increase profits and will lead the business to more profits than losses.
