Abstract
|
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing employee motivation in the manufacturing industry. This study examined the extent to which employee motivation is influenced by non-monetary incentives, monetary incentives and working conditions. Descriptive design was used for this study and the study was carried out at an electronics manufacturing company at a prominent industrial area in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. The company has around one thousand two hundred employees, of which one thousand are in production while the rest are not. Convenience sampling method was used to collect one hundred samples and the data was then analysed using descriptive statistics. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel were used to generate quantitative reports that were then presented in the form of tables and figures, including mean and standard deviation. Multiple regression analysis was used to predict changes in the dependent variable in response to the independent variables. The study found that non-monetary incentives greatly affected employee motivation, in particular training. The study also found allowance, bonus, salary and employee share option scheme were inadequately offered. The study concluded the company had fair working conditions. The study recommended more emphasis be given to training to ensure employees were equipped with the skills needed to stay competitive, that employees be rewarded for good attendance to keep productivity high and the workspace be made more ergonomic to reduce injuries and fatigue among other things. This is necessary given the importance of production workers who make up the majority of workers at this manufacturing company.
