Title An analysis of non-woven bags (recycle bags) towards shoppers at E-mart Supermarket in Kuching / Chong Sing Tze.
Abstract Malaysia was ranked as the eighth largest producer of plastic waste in the world. According to a study in Science Magazine (2015), Malaysia had produced almost one million tonnes of mismanaged plastic waste in the Year 2010. Although, the Malaysian government had launched a campaign to create awareness among the public on the risk of expansive consumption of plastic since 2009 by limiting the plastic shopping bags consumption yet this is still inadequate to reduce the amount of plastic waste. This study is to determine 342 shoppers’ intention to adopt non-woven bags at E-mart supermarket in Kuching from the perspective of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). The instrument used to collect the primary data is close-ended questionnaire because it is a cost-effective and quickly method to obtain information from a large population while the past literatures and researches on TPB will be the secondary data. The collected data is computed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) in order to analyse the findings which are displayed in the form of tables, pie charts and histograms. Besides, frequencies, mean, standard deviation kurtosis, skewness analysis, Cronbach’s alpha, factor analysis and Pearson’s correlation analysis were explained. The research findings showed that perceived consumer effectiveness is the highest influence, followed by shoppers’ attitude while social influence is the weakest among the independent variables. All the determinants are statistically significant and positively influence the shoppers’ intention. In this study, TPB model is a good model to be applied to comprehend the shoppers’ intention to adopt non-woven bags. Based on the result, the author recommends that the green awareness or program on protecting the environment should be concerned on the attitude, social influence and perceived consumer effective such as plogging and campaign in order to change a person’s behaviour. In future, a larger sample size of the research is recommended so it can be generalized to the population of Sarawak. In addition, it should not only focus on non-woven bags but other green product and take into account of the actual behaviour of respondents. Overall, the purpose of the study will bring benefits to E-mart supermarket in term of understanding and determine the green market capabilities through shoppers’ behaviour with the intention of using non-woven bags. Lastly, this empirical result is able to provide and assist the related parties to have a better understanding of the potential of non-woven bags in the current Malaysia market.
