Title A study on factors contributing to implementation on flexible working arrangements in manufacturing industry in Penang / Seah Wan Ying
Abstract Over past decade, various pieces of literature have explored the implementation of flexible working arrangements in western countries. However, only a handful of organisations either in Malaysia or in Penang have implemented these flexible working arrangements. It is a practical way of running day-to-day operations. There are difficulties in getting quality talent and retain top performing employees, attendance and productivity issues, and increasing costs of operation, organisations have begun to think of the benefits of implementation of flexible working arrangements. The experience of companies successful in implementing flexible working arrangements in Multinational Companies can also be obtained from the Talent Corporation Malaysia website which serves as a driving force and guideline to organisations. Flexible working arrangements are also referred to as agile, alternative or new way working. The purposes of this study were to analyse and evaluate the various factors including work-life balance, attracting and retaining quality talent, reduction in absenteeism, improvement in quality and cost saving that influencing the implementation of flexible working arrangement of the manufacturing industry in Penang. Besides, insights and recommendations are also provided to encourage more employers to implement flexible working arrangements. A questionnaire survey was used for data collection. Based on the result of the analysis, work-life balance, attracting and retaining quality talent, reduction in absenteeism, improvement in quality and cost saving have a significant relationship with the implementation of flexible working arrangements in the manufacturing industry in Penang.
