Title A study on determinants of the critical success factors influencing choice of logistics service providers : an empirical assessment in Northern Region Malaysia Ocean Container Carriers. / Lee Kee Lin.
Abstract The selection of ocean container carrier’s service is a high priority activity related to logistics management. because the right transportation system will ensure that the right product is delivered to the right customer in the right quantity at the right time and at the right cost. Therefore, shippers are interested in making sure they are choosing the right service providers based on right criterion. Previously the main deciding criterion for carrier selection was based on the selection of lowest transportation cost, but due to the change of market environment, the criterion could be varying by now. The purpose of this research paper is aim to examine the determinants that influencing the selection of ocean container carriers, which has the potential to benefits ocean container carriers in devising effective marketing strategies to attract and retain shippers or ocean transportation intermediaries in North Region of Malaysia. This paper enables container carriers to understand the various criteria Malaysian shippers use in the container carriers decisions along with their relative importance in such decision. In addition, this study also can be used to assist logistics managers in assessing the critical factors for choosing ocean container carriers. The ocean container carriers’ capabilities in this study are rate, customers service, operations, reputation, scheduling and information technology. The objective of this study is also to determine the intervening (or mediating) impact on carriers’ capabilities towards the strategic selection of ocean container carriers. The quantitative research method was applied for this study. The survey yield response rate is 41%, data from 61 out of 150 set questionnaires through email survey questionnaires and traditional paper questionnaires being used during face-to-face met up with respondents. All respondents are exporters, importers and ocean transport intermediaries in the Northern region of Malaysia, which cover Perlis, Kedah, Penang, and Perak. The empirical study was conducted by applying in-depth IBM’s Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) analytics. The results were achieved by using two-step Hierarchical Multiple Regression method so that rigidity of the results is academically accepted. The findings revealed that all of six (6) determination (i.e. scheduling, reputation, customer service, information technology, operations and rates) towards the strategic selection of ocean container carriers at 5% significant level. The strongest influences are scheduling and reputation. Further findings concluded that perceived benefits have partial mediate or intervene one of the carriers’ capability (information technology) towards the strategic selection of ocean container carriers. Besides, the analysis on the demographics indicated that types of business and types of cargoes have a significant influence towards the strategic carrier selection, whereas none of demographic profiles are significant towards perceived benefits. The managerial predictive model indicated that five (5) variables, namely customer service, operations, reputation, scheduling and perceived benefits are significantly predicting the strategic selection of ocean container carriers. The major limitation of this study is that it is narrow in scope as it has not included the study whether there are any significant perceptual differences in the importance of various criteria between carriers and shippers. Future research should continue to evaluate two-dimensional studies to find the perceptual differences between both groups. The findings from this study meet the overall research objectives and provide solutions for the problem statements of insufficient in-depth study, determining the best-fit criteria and establishing an empirical model on the strategic selection of ocean container carriers among shippers and ocean transportation intermediaries in Northern region of Malaysia.
