Title A study on effective warehouse structuring system in the supply chain : the mediating role of responsive logistics in Northern Malaysia manufacturers. / Foo Mei Teng
Abstract In current business context, warehouse serves as supply conduit between suppliers and customers. It’s important to identify critical operational determinants that ensures responsive flow of information, materials and the associated cash flows along the value chain. The objective of this research study is to assess the warehouse’s determinants towards supply chain impact and the mediating role of responsive logistics system. These determinants categorised as “Warehouse Structuring System” which consists of System Layout Design, Environment & Facilities, Equipment, Tools & Technologies, Knowledge & Compliance which being the independent variables of the study. Another objective of this research study is to examine the mediating impact of Responsive Logistics towards supply chain impact. As such, supply chain impact being the dependent variable of the study while Responsive Logistics is the intervening variable of the study. The scope of the study focuses on warehouses located in the Northern region of Malaysia. This study adopted cross-sectional method incorporated with quantitative survey whereby 98 sets of questionnaires were sent thru emails and 61 sets of responds are received. The data then transformed to the meaningful information with the aid of the SPSS software. The findings revealed that five warehouse’s determinants towards supply chain impact are significant towards Responsive Logistics as well as supply chain impact at 5% significant level. Among them, Environment & Facilities has the strongest influence towards the supply chain impact. As such, manufacturers should allocate more resources in warehouse’s Environment & Facilities set up as well as its maintenance. Further study defined that Responsive Logistics has mediating effect between both Warehouse Structuring System and supply chain impact. Although the findings encountered that demographic has no significant towards Responsive Logistics but it found that daily shipment transaction in the warehouse and package type of the product have significant influences towards supply chain impact. The result of the study concluded that Responsive Logistics has mediating impact on the influence of system towards supply chain impact. The study’s limitations are time, generalisation, resources, limited dimensions and social influences. It was suggested that future research to increase the sample size and expand the coverage areas. The study’s findings met with overall research objectives and provided solutions for the problem statement that addressed in the study. A best-fit criterion is established and an empirical model of supply chain has developed. The empirical model proposed that manufacturers should concentrate on Environment & Facilities aspect when planning supply chain strategy thus this study provides insight to manufacturers on how effective warehouse determinants assist in effective supply chain with the intervening role of Responsive Logistics.
