Title A study on management information system on business process performance: an empirical assessment of shared services in multi-national companies in Penang. / Lee Li Mei.
Abstract Many companies are investing on MIS on their business processes in order to increase their business performance. This is usually the case for growing companies or big MNCs especially those located in Free Trade Zones to have direct investment in the productivity of the company either through manufacturing or shared services companies. It was found that not much study has been done especially to the growth of shared services in lower cost region like Malaysia or Penang. In order for companies to continue to make higher profit, companies need to stay competitive and having MIS innovation helps to facilitate the factors that contribute better business process performance. This research aims to study the Management Information System on business process performance on Shared Services companies among MNCs that are based in Penang. It comprises manufacturing or non-manufacturing industries like banking, finance/accounting or even Human Resources. In this study, a survey of 74 respondents located in Penang participated and it was distributed via Google Form which is an online survey platform. An initial pilot testing was done on 30 respondents in order to test and validate the validity of the survey questions before the full samples were taken to complete this study. After that, the results are analysed using statistical analysis software like SPSS that helps to form or derive with additional hypotheses between the core dimension of influence that are performance experience, social experience and management support verses moderating variable that is user intention to use or intervening variable that is system integration and lastly the dependent variable that is business performance. The result provided empirical evidence at 5% significant level that shared service in Penang have positive business process performance with higher level of performance expectation, social experience and management support. System integration intervenes the impact of these factors against business performance, suggesting shared services to focus on various system and business process integrating to business needs. In addition, the impact on system integration towards depends on user’s intention to use. Higher level of user intention to use leads to higher level of business performance with the right level of system integration. In MNCs, if the systems integrates with all the departments which allows inter departmental information to be linked then the data accuracy is higher as no manual intervention is needed to feed information from one system to another and thus produce faster results in obtaining its information. This will then help management to make the best decision for the company. In this research, there are some limitations encountered especially in the selection of data collection method, sampling technique are used, some demographic profiles of the sample are selected as well as the amount of time given to carry out the research. In future, if there are further research to be conducted, bigger sample size should be targeted as well as using different sampling method like quota sampling in order to cover bigger areas and obtain a more reliable representative of the Penang workforce. In conclusion, the objectives of this research have been achieved by having better insight to the core MIS dimensions that performance experience will be the main factor to get the employees to accept the implementation of MIS innovation. Not only that, when the system integrates, then more employees will have higher intention to use as it helps them to be more productive at their work. This will eventually leads to higher level of business performance in the company.
