Title Manufacturing system determinants affecting industry 4.0 infrastructure: an empirical study in Penang industry. / Choong Yean Yean.
Abstract Industry 4.0 refers to the fourth industrial revolution that was introduced in year 2011. It will be marked by full automation, digitalization, and the advancement in electronics and information technologies like Big Data, industrial internet of things (IIoT), and additive manufacturing which will highly affect businesses by transforming the current socioeconomic. Malaysia has been reported to be lagging behind to embrace Industry 4.0, especially SMEs, which is the main establishments in the country. The focus of the study has been in the context of manufacturing industry in the state of Penang, which is known as the Silicon Valley of Malaysia. Thisresearch aimed to study the factors that affect Industry 4.0 Infrastructure towards manufacturer’s Competitive Advantage, which at the same time investigating readiness of Penang manufacturing industry in incorporating Industry 4.0 technology. It was studied from the Manufacturing System Determinants perspective i.e.Productivity, Flexible ManufacturingSystem, Mass Customization, Data Security, and Cost Incentive. Questionnaire survey was conducted on the unit of analysis of 76 participants from Penang manufacturing Industry through convenience sampling and statistical analyses were conducted throughStatistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) Software. Result of this study indicatedthat all the five Manufacturing System Determinants were statistically proven influencingIndustry 4.0 Infrastructureat 5% significant level.Andthere was partial intervening effect from Industry 4.0 Infrastructure through Data Security and Cost Incentive towards manufacturer’s Competitive Advantage. Besides, the level of implementation on automated production, real time data collection, and Industry 4.0 technology adoption were found influencing the competitive advantage of a company. A strong predictive model was then developed, which related 5 variables (i.e. Productivity, Flexible Business Process, Mass Customization, Cost Incentive, and Industry 4.0 Infrastructure) to the dependent variable, Competitive Advantage with the R Square value of 78%. As Industry 4.0 technology deployment requires structured, holistic approach focusing on increasing business value, the factors from the manufacturing systemperspective; i.e.Productivity, Flexible Manufacturing System, Mass Customization, Data Security, and Cost Incentiveare worth to be considered as the success factors of Industry 4.0 deployment strategy.Penang manufacturing industry is poised to Industry 4.0 deployment. To reap the benefits from this forth industry revolution, manufacturers in Penang, especially local SMEs could start by identifying the opportunity of improvements and key success factors from the view of manufacturing system determinants, which align to their companies’ objectives and goals. There were some limitations in the research: narrow in scope, restriction in generalization, as well as social desirability, convenience and cultural influence. The future research is recommended toexpand the scope of study to wider scope and larger geographical coverage, as well as deploying more interactive survey method like face-to-face interview. In summary, this research study provides an insight on how do the factors from manufacturing system determinants perspective influence the Industry 4.0 infrastructure in Penang manufacturing industry towards competitive advantage. The study suggests that manufacturer needs to make strategic investment decision based on manufacturing success factors, and focus on increasing business value in deploying Industry 4.0
